Meaning Analysis | Row, row, row your boat | Screwed up

Row, row, row your boat / Gently down the stream / Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily / Life is but a dream

“Row, Row, Row Your Boat” --- charming nursery rhyme or vain attempt to inoculate children against the existential meaninglessness of life? Hidden below the glossy surface of this beloved song is a dark and bitter commentary on the human condition. Let’s talk about it.
The most critical line is, of course, the final one. “Life is but a dream.” There’s just no way to pussyfoot around the implications of that lyric ---what we’re telling kids here is that life has no purpose. The song isn’t suggesting that life resembles a dream, ie: surreal, sometimes ideal and sometimes horrific. If it was, the line would be “Life is like a dream.” No, instead it’s suggesting that life is literally a dream, ie: non-real, an elaborate façade, a hallucination in which your actions are utterly inconsequential.
At first glance, “Life is but a dream” is just a confident embrace of solipsism, the theory that the self is all that can be known, for sure, to exist. Ah, if only it were that simple. Pay close attention to the word “but,” the most important word in the whole song. Now it’d be one thing to say, “Life is a dream.” Ok, fine, maybe life is a dream, maybe we are trapped in the Matrix, is that really so awful?
YES. That’s the song’s blunt reply to your question, via the word “but.” It’s a belittling “but,” hurling condescension at any hopes you may have for this pleasant fantasyland. If I were to say, “You are but an American” you wouldn’t think I had a very high opinion of your nationality, now would you? In the sick, twisted mind of the narrator, dreams are a sad sub-optimal reality, and “life” is no better.
So now what? Now that you’ve told your doe-eyed son or daughter that he/she may actually be the lone inhabitant of a pathetic little dream world, how do you suggest coping with that deeply unsettling realization? “Just keep rowing your fucking boat kid, and be happy about it. “
At last we can begin to appreciate the rhyme’s first three lines: a scathing critique of capitalism conveyed through the tragic hero of the boat-rower. “Rowing” represents man’s futile attempt to find purpose in an indifferent, meaningless universe. The boat-rower feels that he’s exercising his free will, choosing his own path in his own vehicle. That’s why he’s merry, even when confronted with the fact that life is “but a dream.”
But is he really free?
First of all, did the boat-rower really choose to row this boat, or was he coerced into tedious manual labor by the same sick son of a bitch who later reveals that reality is a big shitty hallucination?  Doesn’t “Row, row, row” sound an awful lot like a command, an order even? The poor boatman can’t even choose how to row --- he has to do it merrily and gently (which is pretty difficult, by the way, since rowing requires a lot of physical exertion and is a violent motion). He’s not in control of his body or his mind, now that you’ve told him what to do, how to feel, and where to go.
Second of all, I hate to point out the obvious, but why the fuck would you row a boat downstream? You could just as easily let the current carry you. Sounds merrier to me. Rowing serves no purpose whatsoever. Whether you row or not, you will still arrive at the same destination, “down the stream,” which is clearly a euphemism for death (let’s not lose sight of the obvious literary allusion to the boatman of Greek mythology). What you're telling your kid here is that free will is an illusion meant to keep you busy, to keep you distracted from the inescapable meaningless of reality.
And all you’re really doing here is preparing your son or daughter for the capitalist rat race, for a lifetime of endless “rowing” (aka working) and forced contentment, despite the fact that nothing is in your control and life only exists in your head. Don't you see it? God, even the hypnotic melody of the rhyme is meant to lull you into complacency and disguise the nursery rhyme’s true message: that life isn’t a dream, it’s a nightmare.

Life is But a Dream’ Meaning

Most nursery rhymes and fairy tales have a disturbing background and meaning. So when my siblings and I were lying around in my room and we started singing ‘Row your Boat’, I figured it’d have some demented origin. Like rowing to your doom, being drowned or being forced down a path to your own beheading.
Surprisingly, this one has a good meaning. And when I looked it up, I was smacking my forehead. Because I already knew what it was a metaphor for. What can I say? Sometimes I forget it’s not all burning people to death and water dragons.
Duh. I love the meaning behind this nursery rhyme.
It’s a metaphor for life. We all agree on that. But there are multiple theories on how to break it down, what each object and line mean.
There are two main ideologies and a few random thoughts on specific verses.
ONE
Your boat = your life.
The stream = time. Water is always moving, so is time.
Row, row, row = you’re constantly rowing, constantly moving through life, constantly working at it. You don’t just row for a little while and then rest. Uh-uh. No breaks. No rests. Life. Keep moving.
Gently = It’s not a race. You aren’t racing toward the end – um, your death –are you? Gently row through life, don’t hurry. It’s the trip (life) not the destination (death).
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily = attitude, personality, character. How you look at things, positive versus negative, optimist versus pessimist. Be happy, be passionate on the way. They say attitude is everything. Enjoy your life, enjoy the ride.
Life is but a dream = Dream or nightmare, we have the ability to choose what our life will be. We cannot decide what happens, but we can decide who we are, what we become, how we react, how we cope. It’s our life, our dream. And our choice.

TWO
Boat = body. It’s the vessel for your movement, changes, growth, learning, development, awareness.
Row, row, row = you have to work for what you want in life, have to apply effort to get where you want to go. Unless you row, your boat won’t go anywhere. Be careful of distractions that could pull you away from your goal. But don’t be so focused, have such blinders on, that you don’t remain open to change, to life, to possibilities.
Gently down the stream = let go of the past, move toward your future. Row gently because to push or force or fight the natural direction your life is leading you will only create stress and upset.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily = you may already have it hard. Don’t make it worse. Water can be rough but you can get through. A negative attitude will not help, in fact, it will make things worse. Use the challenges you face to make you a better person.
Life is but a dream = touches on the dreamlike state of reality. The world is physical around us, yet thoughts and emotions change, shift, alter, transmutation making something less physical, solid. Dreamlike.
RANDOM
  • Row, row, row your boat:
You have to row your own boat. No one else’s. Don’t try to control other people. Control yourself.
Rowing takes skill. Practice makes perfect.
When someone is rowing on their own, it implicates free will and the choices they make that decide which paths they take.
When rowing with others, it touches on the need to work together, in unity to reach the intended goal.
  • Gently down the stream:
Force creates resistance. Don’t resist if you can flow along with the water’s natural path and make something of it. This is different than fighting the challenges, the bumpy stream’s road.
  • Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily:
Take challenges in stride, meet them with a joyous attitude and a smile. Go with the flow.
This is not a rehearsal, not a dry run, not a trial run before the real thing. This is the real thing. You might as well enjoy it. Don’t waste time being upset longer than need be or by holding grudges when you could be happy instead.
  • Life is but a dream:
So stop making it a nightmare.
It has religious overtones of how life is simply the dream before the consequences/rewards.
Life is only a dream, not real. Everything you do is meaningless. (I don’t like this one.)
Life is a short moment. Only a dream when compared to our eternal soul’s existence.
OUR LIFE
With that in mind, remember that it’s talking about your life for a reason. Ask yourself;
Row, row, row your boat.
Where are you going? Are you headed where you want to be headed? Are you working for what you want? Are you trying to control someone else’s life (with good or bad intentions)? Are you trying to control things you know you can’t/shouldn’t? Are you trying to race through your life? Are you learning, growing, achieving what you want? Are you open to positive change? Open to new paths?
Gently down the stream.
Are you fighting things for the sake of fighting them? Are you fighting for what you believe in without being cruel or self-destructive? Do you approach your life with hope? Have you worked through and let go of your past? Are you enjoying the journey, the process, whatever it is that you’re doing right now? Are you hurrying through things you could instead be enjoying? Are you flexible when things change? Do you adapt well to change?
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily.
Are you happy? Why or why not? Are you holding grudges or focusing on the negative to the point that you’re creating your own heartache? Are you approaching things with a positive attitude? Do you try to find the silver lining? Are you passionate about what you’re doing? Are you aware that regardless of trials, pain, suffering and challenges, there is always hope?
Life is but a dream.
There are three definitions of a dream :
1: “a succession of images, thoughts, or emotions passing through the mind during sleep.”
2: “a vision voluntarily indulged in while awake; daydream; reverie.” “an idea or vision that is created in your imagination and that is not real”
3: “something that you have wanted very much to do, be, or have for a long time”
Are you helping your life to be a dream or a nightmare? How can your life be more dreamlike; what would you need to do/achieve/change to shape your life into a dream – your dream? Are you making the right choices for yourself? If your life is a nightmare, what can you do to work toward bettering it?
Row, row, row your boat,
Gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream.

Just remember: Water is rough but boats are tough.

Bruce Arena new coach of US Soccer Team

1. He's been as successful as any American soccer coach in history

Arena and winning -- on the collegiate and domestic league level -- go hand in hand. Arena started coaching at the University of Virginia in 1978 and won five national championships in 18 seasons, with a record of 295-58-32. There he groomed some of the biggest names in U.S. Soccer history like Claudio Reyna, Jeff Agoos, John Harkes and Tony Meola.
After his stint at UVA, he went on to coach D.C. United of MLS from 1996-98, winning two MLS Cups. Overall, he has won five MLS Cups (three with his current team, the Los Angeles Galaxy).
Arena's five MLS Cups are three more than the next closest coach.

2. Arena is familiar with the role

Arena coached the U.S. from 1998-2006, guiding the team in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups. He has more wins as USMNT manager than anyone else in history and guided the team to that brilliant run to the quarterfinals in 2002, his finest accomplishment.

3. He is the logical short-term fix

Based on his past experience as USMNT manager, he was always going to be the quick-fix choice. He averaged six wins per each 10-game hexagonal round he's guided his teams through. He is also familiar with some of the players, especially Tim Howard and Clint Dempsey, both of which were on his 2006 World Cup roster.
That roster also had Landon Donovan, who he signed out of retirement this year for the Galaxy (yeah, wouldn't a return to USA be crazy for LD?)
So, it's the obvious choice and U.S. Soccer hopes it's the right choice.

4. He's a big Landon Donovan fan, but could he return?

Donovan is one of Arena's favorites, and rumors are going to swirl, and there is no reason to think that Arena won't give Donovan a look, either as a player or assistant coach. The latter is the most likely in my opinion.
Since rejoining the Galaxy, Donovan has started two of the nine games he's played and scored only one goal. The 34-year-old is surely nearing the end of his playing career, but he loves the sport and is knowledgeable, which could land him a spot alongside Arena.

5. He may have some explaining to do

File this under "how things could get weird." A few years back, Arena had some strong words for foreign-born American players. He's pretty much against them.

Facebook

This is the biggest social media network on the Internet, both in terms of total number of users and name recognition. Founded on February 4, 2004, Facebook has within 12 years managed to accumulate more than 1.59 billion monthly active users and this automatically makes it one of the best mediums for connecting people from all over the world with your business. It is estimated that more than 1 million small and medium-sized businesses use the platform to advertise their business.

Twitter

You might be thinking that limiting your posts to 140 characters is no way to advertise your business, but you will be shocked to know that this social media platform has more than 320 million active monthly users who make use of the 140 character limit to pass on information. Businesses can use Twitter to interact with prospective clients, answer questions, release latest news and at the same time use the targeted ads with specific audiences. Twitter was founded on March 21, 2006, and has its headquarters in San Francisco, California.

LinkedIn

Founded on December 14, 2002, and launched 0n May 5, 2003, LinkedIn is hands-down the most popular social media site for professional networking. The website is available in 24 languages and has over 400 million registered users. LinkedIn is great for people looking to connect with people in similar industries, networking with local professionals and displaying business related information and statistics.

Google+

While it’s no Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn, Google+ has its place among the popular social media sites. Its SEO value alone makes it a must-use tool for any small business. Launched on December 15, 2011, Google+ has joined the big leagues registering 418 active million users as of December 2015.

YouTube

YouTube — the largest and most popular video-based social media website — was founded on February 14, 2005, by three former PayPal employees. It was later bought by Google in November 2006 for $1.65 billion. YouTube has over 1 billion website visitors per month and is the second most popular search engine behind Google.

Pinterest

Launched in March 2010, Pinterest is a relatively newcomer in the social media arena. This platform consists of digital bulletin boards where businesses can pin their content.  Pinterest announced September 2015 that it had acquired 100 million users. Small businesses whose target audience is mostly made up of women should definitely invest in Pinterest as more than half of its visitors are women.

Instagram

Like Pinterest, Instagram is a visual social media platform. The site, launched on October 6, 2010, has more than 400 million active users and is owned by Facebook. Many of its users use it to post information about travel, fashion, food, art and similar subjects. The platform is also distinguished by its unique filters together with video and photo editing features. Almost 95 percent of Instagram users also use Facebook.

Tumblr

Tumblr is one of the most difficult to use social networking platforms, but it’s also one of the most interesting sites. Like Twitter, reblogging, which is more like retweeting, is quick and easy. The social networking website was founded by David Karp in February 2007 and currently hosts more than 200 million blogs.

Flickr

Flickr, pronounced “Flicker,” is an online image and video hosting platform that was created by the then Vancouver-based Ludicorp on February 10, 2004, and later acquired by Yahoo in 2005. An average of a million photos are shared daily on Flickr.

Reddit

This is a social news and entertainment networking website where registered users can submit content such as direct links and text posts. Users are also able to organize and determine their position on the site’s pages by voting submissions up or down. Submissions with the most positive votes appear in the top category or main page. Reddit was founded by University of Virginia roommates Alexis Ohanian and Steve Huffman on June 23, 2005. A decade later, the site boasts more than 36 million registered accounts and 231 million monthly visitors.

Snapchat

Snapchat is an image messaging application software product that was created by Reggie Brown, Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy when they were students at Stanford University. The app was officially released in September 2011, and within a short span of time they have grown immensely registering an average of 100 million daily active users as of May 2015. More than 18 percent of all social media users use Snapchat.

WhatsApp

Today, more than 1 billion people use the service to communicate with their friends, loved ones and even customers.

Quora

Capitalizing upon human curiosity is an ingenious idea that would lead to the creation and launch of Quorain June, 2009. The website, co-founded by two former Facebook employees, Charlie Cheever and Adam D’Angelo now claims that it received more than 80 million monthly unique visitors, with half of them coming from the U.S. So far, the question-and-answer website has managed to raise $141 in venture capital funds and while it doesn’t look ready to go public yet, it’s definitely a company to watch.

Vine

With over 40 million users, Vine is a rapidly growing video sharing social media app that allows users to share 6-second video clips with their followers. While this looks like a really short time for a video, businesses of all sizes are having tremendous success using the service. Vine was founded in June 2012 and later acquired by Twitter in October 2012, just before its official launch.

Periscope

Periscope is a live video streaming mobile app that was developed by Joe Bernstein and Kayvon Beykpour. The two started the company in February 2014 and later sold it to Twitter for $100 million in March 2015. Four months after its March 2015 relaunch, Periscope said that it had surpassed 10 million accounts and in December the same year, Apple announced Periscope as the app of the year.

BizSugar

StumbleUpon

StumbleUpon is a discovery engine that finds and recommends content for its users. More than 25 million people use StumbleUpon for entertainment and information. In addition, more than 80,000 publishers, brands, and other marketers have used StumbleUpon’s Paid Discovery platform to promote their businesses. StumbleUpon was owned by eBay from May 2007 to April 2009, when Garrett Camp, Geoff Smith and several investors bought it back. It is now an independent, investor-backed startup once again.

Delicious

This is a social bookmarking web service for discovering, storing and sharing web bookmarks. The site was founded by Peter Gadjokov and Joshua Schachter in 2003 and acquired in 2005 by Yahoo. By the end of 2008, Delicious claimed that it had bookmarked 180 million URLs and acquired more than 5.3 million users. The service was later sold to AVOS Systems in April 2011 who later sold it to Science Inc. In January this year, Delicious Media said that it had acquired the service.

Digg

Founded more than a decade ago (November 2004), Digg is a news aggregator with a curated front page that selects stories specifically for the Internet audience, The topics vary widely from trending political issues to science to viral Internet issues and anything in between. Digg supports sharing of content to other social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. In 2015, the company claimed that it had about 11 million active monthly users.

Viber

Viber is a Voice over IP (VoIP) and instant messaging app for mobile devices that was developed and released by Viber Media on December 2, 2010. The app also allows for the exchange of audio, video and images between users. As of April 2014, Viber had accrued close to 600 million registered users and 230 monthly active users.

1. Facebook.

Launched in February 2004 for college students, Facebook has come a long way in a short seven
years. Now with an estimated 800 million active users it is ranked as the most used social
networking service in the world (by the number of active monthly users).
Lucky for you, starting a business page – and tapping into the power of Facebook – is pretty easy.
Once your page is created, users ‘like’ it (opt-in to get your posts) and your news will be posted
to their ‘wall.’
The Facebook interface makes it easy for your fans to ‘like’ or share your posts and when they
do, their friends (the average user has 130 friends) will see this activity, therefore putting your
brand in front of an audience you may not normally have access to.

2. Twitter.

A micro-blogging social media site that has been around since 2004, Twitter has an estimated
300 million users world-wide. It has been described as SMS of the internet, because posts are
short, sweet and to-the- point.
Twitter is a tidal wave of information. Posts come in at 140 characters or less and can be
organized via hashtags (#). Topics range from totally practical (I often search #Boulder) to the
absolutely absurd (#gympetpeeve).
Twitter differs from Facebook in that users ‘follow’ each other. If someone follows you, you can
follow them back. Therefore it is easier to gain a following, but the followers are not as targeted
as they are on Facebook.
I have found that Twitter is an awesome way to connect with people and/or other businesses
participating in the same event. Following a hashtag at a concert, live performance or webinar
creates a richer experience. As a business owner you can utilize this at events your company
participates in – try it! – I’ll bet you’d be blown away by the response.

3. YouTube.

YouTube is a video sharing social media site that is owned by Google. There are more than 48
hours of new video uploaded to the site every minute. Wow! As a small business owner, using
video in your online marketing strategy – and the back-end key words of your YouTube video –
is just as important as your other online strategies.
YouTube recently announced YouTube for schools and I predict more ‘stations’ will be rolling
out in the future. Will your specialty be included? Maybe!

4. Google+ (Google Plus).

Google is a power house, this is no surprise. Originally launched as a search engine company in
1996, Google has continually added, updated and created new products that will appeal to it’s1
billion unique visitors per month.
Google Plus was introduced in June 2011 for personal use and in November 2011 was opened to
brands. Some of the features of Google+ include: Circles, Hangouts, Messenger, Instant Upload,
Hashtags and more. These products are definitely designed with the user in mind. The downside
– there is no way to create a vanity url for your brand page.
Even though this is Google’s fourth go at a social media site, you cannot deny the importance of
adding your brand to there, if for search engine rankings alone.

5. LinkedIn.

Founded in 2002 and launched in 2003, LinkedIn is THE premier B2B social networking site. LI
gets 2 new members every second, putting it at 135 million active users in more than 200
countries.
Traditionally viewed as the spot to put your resume and search for a job, LinkedIn has grown
into a robust networking site. From job listings to interest groups (there are more than 870K
groups) there are great benefits to keeping your profile up-to- date. Look at it like a business after
hours event…. put on your suit, add a smile to your face and be on your best behavior because
you never know what kind of business leads you’re going to get.
I always recommend dedicating an hour or so a week maintaining your LI profile. Also, be sure
add your company listing, and update it as well. Use your LI company profile page like a resume
for your business.

6. Pinterest.

If your products are visually appealing, then this social media site is for you. Pinterest is a vision
board-styled social photo sharing site that was launched in 2009. The mission is to connect
everyone in the world through shared taste and the things they find interesting.
Users find and create theme-based boards, populating these ‘boards’ with a “Pin It” button. Pins
may be divided into pictures, videos, discussions, and gifts.
Users may follow anyone or any brand, users can also ‘re-pin’ your pinned items. Companies
with product photos can gain a huge following and quick.

7. Ryze.

Started in 2001, Ryze is a social networking site for professionals – particularly entrepreneurs.
It’s free to join and there are paid memberships are available. There are currently over 500,000
members worldwide.
More than 1000 organizations host networks on Ryze. According to their website, networks on
Ryze let existing organizations and communities plus new ones use Ryze’s technology to
connect their members with each other.
As of this posting, Ryze is not accepting new members. How intriguing!

8. Talkbiznow

Talkbiznow is a web-based business community that provides business services for small
businesses and professionals. In addition to the basic functionality of creating a profile and
connecting with others, users can manage a calendar, store files (up to 50MG of free space!),
host webinars, manage all other social media sites with Social One and lots more.
The company’s mission is to simplify the essential business services and seamlessly integrate
and deliver them through the internet for Free. Making it possible for businesses of all sizes to
network, collaborate and essentially expand their services in avenues they might not have
explored before.
Talkbiznow could be a great site to help get the social media newby moving in the right
direction. Sign up is easy, and the profile build and management is user-friendly. I especially like
the free collaboration and desktop services: file sharing, web conferencing and voice
conferencing.

9. Affluence

This is a social media site for the (you guessed it) affluent. In fact, you you must prove your
worth before you can even join, so I can’t tell you much about it, other than it’s intriguing.
Affluence is a private social network where accomplished individuals connect, share
information, and engage in meaningful conversations. Members also enjoy exclusive, high-
quality content and feature advice from industry experts on subjects such as art, technology and
travel.
So, if you fall in the income range of a “verifiable minimum household net worth of $1 million
(US) or annual household income of $200,000,” then this most certainly could be the spot for
you!
